Breakfast with Economist Tony Alexander

Despite rising interest rates, supply chain problems, cost of living increases, falling house prices and a brain drain, the NZ economy will continue to grow over the coming year. However businesses face some large challenges, not the least of which will be worsening labour shortages. If higher wages cannot be afforded then some hard decisions will need to be made regarding ability to continue in operation, potential for economies of scale through acquisition, or boosting labour productivity with new investment. At least prospects for interest rate rises are not necessarily all that severe.

About Tony:

Tony Alexander was Chief Economist at the BNZ for almost 25 years and has been out on his own as an independent economist since late-2019. He distributes the free weekly “Tony’s View” publication to over 25,000 subscribers each week, writes a weekly column for OneRoof, has a weekly video blog, and speaks at about 80 functions a year around New Zealand. He also runs six monthly surveys which give coalface insight into what is happening in NZ industry and the housing market in particular.
